ABUKO NATURE RESERVE

Abuko Nature Reserve was set up by an Englishman and is very easy to reach. As described under FLORA AND FAUNA you shouldn’t expect Africa’s Big Five but the diversity of birds and trees/plants is enormous. In this park you will find a.o. porcupines, warthogs, crocodiles, snakes and monitors (dragon lizards). There also is an animal-orphanage where you can see different wildlife such as hyenas and monkeys. Until 2004 there was also a lion on display

which came into The Gambia through an exchange project with the Dutch zoo Beekse Bergen, unfortunately the lion escaped and had to be shot. Since then Abuka, like the rest of The Gambia is lionless.
