The Gambia is a true paradise for the ornithologist (birdlover). Some 450 species are known to this day but still new species are discovered. Unfortunately most larger mammals here are extinct due to the hunting which was practised in the 19th century. The well known “African Big Five” won’t be found in The Gambia because elephants, rhino’s, giraffes, lions, buffalo’s and big antelopes have migrated to greener (and safer) pastures, although up country some hippo’s and crocodiles still lurk in the river. Many smaller monkey species still can be spotted, like the green velvet monkey. Chimpanzees are only to be found at Baboon Island National Park. Still remaining are small antelopes, porcupines and warthogs. The Gambia has some National Parks were these animals roam free.
