GEORGE TOWN - JANGJANG BUREH

The journey to Georgetown is approximately 9 hours by jeep.

Georgetown, situated on Jangjang Bureh Ilsand (McCarthy Island)

near the north bank of the Gambia river, is a historical place where many remainders from the colonial- and slave period are to be found.

Sad example of this is the so called “Running Tree” where the English occupier , as a from of entertainment, would promise slaves their freedom if they could reach the tree alive after running through a rain of bullets. Needles to say very few slaves gained their freedom in that way.

A ferry maintains the ferry services to the south bank. At the docking area of the ferry many English and Portuguese buildings from the colonial period can be seen and also the locals do their washing there.

The journey to Georgetown is made per jeep and is suitable for the more adventurous traveller as this trip leads you right through the traditional heart of The Gambia. It is recommended to make this trip in two days and to spend the night at or near Georgetown. In this part of the Gambia river chances are big that you will be able to see some hippo’s.
