In The Gambia you can ONLY withdraw cash money from an ATM with a Visa credit card (that has a pincode). It is best to take cash or traveller cheques, and to keep these in your safety deposit box at your hotel. The national currency is called The Dallasi en because it is undergoing heavy inflation the exchange rate can differ at times. Your guide will know the correct recent exchange rate en can lend a helping hand at the money exchange offices. Also at the hotel is is often possible to exchange money.
